As the fireworks fade and the celebrations of our nation’s 250th anniversary wind down, today feels like the perfect time to turn our hearts toward the One who gives us the deepest freedom of all — Jesus Christ.Sacred Sunday: The True Source of Lasting FreedomYesterday we celebrated national independence. Today, let’s celebrate the greater freedom we have in Christ — the freedom that no government, no circumstance, and no power on earth can take away.

Yesterday we celebrated national independence. Today, let’s celebrate the greater freedom we have in Christ — the freedom that no government, no circumstance, and no power on earth can take away.
Reflection
The story of America is inspiring. In 1776, brave men and women risked everything for the chance to live free from tyranny. They declared independence from a king and dependence on “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” Many of the founding fathers openly acknowledged their reliance on divine Providence. George Washington called on God’s protection throughout the Revolutionary War. John Adams emphasized that the success of the American experiment depended on a moral and religious people. Benjamin Franklin urged the Constitutional Convention to begin with prayer, saying, “God governs in the affairs of men.”
Yet even in that historic moment, they knew their freedom was fragile. They understood that true liberty requires more than a declaration — it requires dependence on God.
Jesus takes this truth to its ultimate fulfillment. In John 8:36, He says, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” This is the freedom that lasts. This is the freedom that no earthly power can revoke. This is the freedom that reaches the deepest parts of who we are — freedom from sin, freedom from fear, freedom from the chains of guilt, shame, and worry.
When Jesus sets us free, He doesn’t just change our circumstances. He changes our hearts. He gives us the power to choose joy even when life is hard. He gives us peace that surpasses understanding. He gives us hope that endures.
This is the heart of the Good Day Summer Series. Every week — from “It’s Gonna Be a Good Day,” to “Pray More, Worry Less,” to “Enjoy The Little Things,” to “Live Happy,” and now “Choose Joy” — has been leading us to this deeper truth: the best life is not found in perfect circumstances. It is found in a deep, abiding relationship with Jesus, the true source of lasting freedom and joy.
When we choose joy in Christ, we are not denying reality. We are seeing reality through the lens of His victory. We are living as people who know the end of the story — that He has overcome the world (John 16:33). We are declaring that no matter what we face, we are free indeed.
The founding fathers faced brutal winters at Valley Forge, financial ruin, and the constant threat of defeat. Yet many of them found strength in faith and a determination to press on. Their resilience and hope in the face of adversity is a powerful example for us today.
When we choose joy, we are following in that same spirit. We are declaring independence from fear, worry, and negativity. We are choosing to live free — free to love, free to hope, free to see the good in every day.
This is the freedom our founding fathers fought for — and the greater freedom Jesus offers us today.
