GOD IS NEAR THE BROKENHEARTED
Thira’s Story: Finding Comfort in the Deepest Loss
On April 2, 2022, Thira Simon’s only daughter went home to heaven at just 30 years old. She went to sleep and simply didn’t wake up. In one moment, Thira’s world shattered. She was suddenly left to raise her four-year-old granddaughter while grieving the sudden loss of her child.
Only six months earlier, she had also lost her pastor unexpectedly. The weight felt crushing — two sudden deaths, single parenting at 53, and a little girl who no longer had her mom. The sadness was overwhelming, not only for herself but especially for her granddaughter.
In that dark valley, God drew especially near.
He reminded Thira of His promise: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). Those words became a lifeline of comfort. Then, through a simple story she heard, a fresh vision took root: to “make life an adventure” for her granddaughter. Instead of staying stuck in sorrow about what had been lost, Thira chose to teach her how to truly live and experience joy again.
God also whispered another promise to her heart: “The Lord takes me up.” She knew He was saying He would carry both her and her granddaughter — and He has, in countless ways. One phrase that brought special peace felt like a gentle message from her daughter: “Mom, I’ve just gone ahead of you.” That truth gave Thira hope of one day being reunited. She also found deep comfort in remembering that God is “the God of all comfort.”
Thira now carries a quiet strength and a desire to encourage others who are grieving. She knows there are many walking through similar pain who desperately need hope.
Reflection: God Is Near the Brokenhearted
Thira’s story is a tender reminder that even in our most devastating losses, God does not stay distant. He draws near.Losing a child is one of the deepest pains a parent can experience. The grief is layered — sorrow for the child who is gone, sorrow for the grandchildren left behind, and the heavy responsibility of continuing forward when everything in you wants to stop. Thira was carrying multiple losses at once, and she felt overwhelmed and stuck.Yet in the middle of that darkness, God met her with gentle, personal comfort. He spoke directly to her broken heart through Scripture.
He gave her a fresh vision to create adventure and joy for her granddaughter.
He assured her that He would take them both up and carry what felt too heavy.
He reminded her that her daughter had simply “gone ahead,” offering the beautiful hope of eternal reunion.
