Feel Good Friday: Choosing Unity Over Division

Feel Good Friday: Choosing Unity Over Division

What Would Jesus Do - A Classic

In the wake of the recent California wildfires and the devastation caused by past disasters like Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, we are reminded of how fragile life can be. Yet, amid these hardships, another troubling trend has emerged: people celebrating misfortune based on political differences. Whether it’s one side blaming liberal policies for wildfires or another using a hurricane to mock conservatives, this divisiveness is a path we can’t afford to tread.

At the core of it all, we’re not defined by our political affiliations. We’re defined by our humanity. As Americans, as neighbors, and as global citizens, our greatest strength lies in coming together, especially during times of crisis. As Jesus reminds us in Mark 12:31, "Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these."

The Problem with Polarization
It’s easy to fall victim to polarizing headlines and the echo chambers of social media. These platforms thrive on outrage and division, encouraging us to see those with differing opinions as enemies rather than fellow humans. But think about it: Do we really want to celebrate another’s suffering simply because they voted differently? When disaster strikes, no one’s political stance matters—what matters is compassion, action, and humanity. As Galatians 6:2 teaches us, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Coming Together in Times of Crisis
Disasters, whether natural or man-made, should remind us of our shared vulnerability. They’re an opportunity to show up for each other, regardless of our differences. Here’s how we can lead with unity:

  • Extend a Helping Hand: Donate to relief efforts, volunteer your time, or offer a kind word to someone who’s struggling. Remember the words of Matthew 5:16: "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

  • Listen Without Judgement: Engage in conversations with people who have different views. You might find more common ground than you expect.

  • Focus on Shared Goals: Remember that we all want safety, security, and a better future for our families and communities. Let this commonality guide our actions.

  • Celebrate Acts of Kindness: Whether it’s a firefighter risking their life in California or a neighbor offering shelter during a hurricane, recognize and amplify these moments of unity.

Why Unity Matters
History has shown us that we’re stronger together. From rebuilding after 9/11 to supporting each other during the COVID-19 pandemic, our resilience has always come from solidarity. When we focus on what unites us rather than what divides us, we create a ripple effect of hope and healing that transcends borders and ideologies. As Romans 12:18 urges, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."

It Feels Good to Do Good
As we move further into this new year, let’s commit to being better—not just for ourselves, but for each other. Let’s resist the urge to point fingers or celebrate misfortune and instead choose kindness, empathy, and action. Imagine a world where every crisis is met with compassion rather than blame, where helping hands replace hateful words, and where we see each other not as rivals but as fellow travelers on this journey of life.

So today, let’s make a choice. Let’s choose unity. Let’s choose humanity. Let’s choose to feel good, not because of what divides us, but because of what brings us together. And as we do, let us hold close the wisdom of 1 Peter 4:8: "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins."

We are all together in this as Americans, and beyond that, we are united as inhabitants of this earth. Even outside of that, we are all one under God.

Take a Moment
Take a moment today to do something kind for someone else—whether it’s donating, volunteering, or simply reaching out with a kind word. Together, we can create a brighter, more unified future.
