Thoughtful Thursday: The Sacred Practice of Giving Thanks

Hey Inspiration Co. family,Happy Thoughtful Thursday! We’re continuing our Grateful Hearts series with open, thankful hearts as we draw closer to Mother’s Day. This week we’ve been gently exploring how gratitude isn’t just a nice feeling — it’s a powerful, life-shaping practice that can bring healing, peace, and deeper connection with God and others.Today we’re focusing on something especially meaningful: the sacred practice of giving thanks.Thoughtful Thursday: The Sacred Practice of Giving ThanksGratitude is far more than a polite habit or a fleeting emotion. When practiced intentionally and consistently, it becomes a sacred practice — a holy rhythm that draws us closer to the heart of God and transforms how we see our lives, our relationships, and even our pain.As we approach Mother’s Day, this invitation feels especially tender. For many of us, thoughts of motherhood bring warmth and joy. For others, they stir complicated feelings — sorrow, regret, distance, longing, or silence. Some relationships with moms were nurturing and life-giving. Others were painful, inconsistent, or marked by absence. Some of us carry regret as parents ourselves, wishing we had done things differently with our children. In these tender, sometimes broken places, the practice of giving thanks becomes a gentle but powerful path toward healing and redemption.Giving thanks doesn’t mean we deny the hurt or pretend everything was perfect. It means we honestly acknowledge the reality of our stories while choosing to lift our eyes to God’s goodness, faithfulness, and redeeming love. It creates space for Him to work in the places that feel most wounded.Psalm 100:4 invites us into this sacred rhythm:
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”
This verse shows us that thanksgiving is not an afterthought — it is the very doorway into God’s presence. When we come to Him with grateful hearts, even when our hearts are heavy, we are welcomed into His courts. Gratitude becomes an act of worship that shifts our perspective and invites His peace.Other verses deepen this truth:
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:18 commands us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This isn’t a suggestion for easy days — it’s a daily spiritual discipline that aligns our hearts with God’s will.
  • Colossians 3:15-17 encourages us to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts… And be thankful.” When gratitude fills our hearts, Christ’s peace begins to rule instead of anxiety, bitterness, or regret.
  • Psalm 103:1-2 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Gratitude helps us remember God’s benefits even in hard seasons.
  • Ephesians 5:20 calls us to give thanks “always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” This kind of radical gratitude is possible only because of Christ’s work on the cross.
When we make giving thanks a sacred practice — especially in complicated family relationships — beautiful things begin to happen. We start seeing God’s hand in the small graces. We find compassion for imperfect parents and children. We experience healing in places we thought were beyond repair. We become more present, more loving, and more hopeful. On this Thoughtful Thursday, if Mother’s Day brings up mixed emotions — love mixed with sorrow, distance mixed with longing, regret mixed with hope — you are not alone. And you are not without a path forward.Let giving thanks become your sacred practice.
Let it reach the places words have never been able to touch.
Let it open the door to redemption in your relationship with your mom, with your children, or with the mother-figure you needed but never fully had.
Gratitude doesn’t fix everything overnight.
But it begins the healing and transformation that only God can complete.

Your Thoughtful Thursday StoryTake a quiet moment today. Is there a complicated or strained relationship in your life — with your mom, with one of your children, or with a mother-figure? Instead of trying to fix it or explain it, offer one honest sentence of gratitude to God for something connected to that relationship — even if it’s small. Write it down. Let this be the beginning of gratitude that heals what words cannot.Practical Tools: Making Gratitude a Sacred Practice
  • Daily Thanksgiving Pause. Set aside 5 minutes each day to simply thank God for three things — big or small.
